Introduction to being a Board Member

C&BS Head of Board Development, Catriona Reynolds, takes new trustees and board members through their paces in two information-packed, hands-on sessions delivered over two days.

Catriona’s course covers everything you need to know to launch your Board career. Over two three-hour online sessions, you’ll explore:

  • Duties of charitable trustees/board members
  • The different roles and responsibilities of board members and staff
  • Meeting management and decision making
  • Advocacy and fundraising
  • Your role in strategic planning
  • Understanding the finances

A reading list (all material available online) is provided in advance of each session to give you background information on different topics. Copies of any exercises will also be sent out in advance so that you can read them and, where appropriate, print them out before taking part. Each session will be a blend of slide presentation, practical exercises carried out in smaller groups, and whole group feedback and discussion.

Ideal if… you have new trustees who have joined your Board recently, are taking on a trustee role for the first time yourself or are simply looking for a refresher.

Highly recommended. Take time to read the material and around the subject and make the most of the opportunity. You'd be very fortunate to get on the course.
